Add: Dataset to Question

This topic covers how to add a dataset to questions. Datasets allow you to create a question that draws from several different data values. Each student is given a different, random row of values allowing for repeat practice and variation across students. The value in the row from the dataset will be interjected into each variable within the question text.

1. Select Tests & Quizzes from the left sidebar.

2. Select the My Test Library tab.

3. Select the name of a test to open it.

4. To add a new question, hover over the Add New button, and select Question from drop-down menu.

5. Alternatively, to add a dataset to an existing question, hover over the gear icon to the right of the question you wish to edit, and select Edit from the drop-down menu.

6. Select + add dataset to add a dataset to the question.

The option to add a dataset is available for most question types with the following exceptions: Select Text, Number Line, Choice Matrix and Instructions Only.

7. Select the radar button to the left of the dataset you wish to add to the question, and select the green Add Dataset button.

Use the filters to view available datasets. Select a subject area and grade level using the drop-down menus at the top left of the window. Then, click the update filters button to re-filter the list. To view a dataset before adding it to the question, select View to the right of a dataset.

8. Alternatively, you can create a new dataset by selecting create a new dataset.

9. Configure the new dataset:

  • Enter a title for your dataset in the Title field.
  • Select a Subject, Min. Grade Level, and Max. Grade Level from the drop-down menus.
  • Enter variables and variable values in the Dataset section.

10. Scroll down to display additional tagging options. Available tagging options include:

  • Student Populations: Check the box next to each appropriate student group.
  • Language: Select a language from the drop-down menu.
  • Keywords: Enter any keywords that you would like to associate with your dataset, ensuring that each keyword is separated by a comma.
  • Taxonomies: Enter the appropriate number in the text box(es).

11. Click the green Add Dataset button to add the dataset to the question.

12. To use the data set in the question, you must insert a dataset variable into the question text.  Insert the name of the variable in curly brackets (i.e. {Apples}, {Oranges}).

Note: You can also insert {Totals} as the correct answer in the Answers field for any question type that requires the correct answer to be defined.

13. The question will now display a random row of variables for each student.  For any question type in which you've supplied {Totals} as the correct answer, each student's question will be automatically scored using the value in the {Totals} column for that row of values in the dataset.

14. You can preview the question by clicking on the Preview Question button at the bottom of the page. The Dataset Record menu can be used to view data from different dataset rows.

15. Select the green Save Question button at the bottom to save the question with the newly inserted dataset.
