Set Basic Settings for Gradebook

This topic covers how to update the basic settings for a class.

If your school is connected to a district account, some of the settings described on this page may be locked to editing.

  1. Select a class to access the class's settings.

  2. Select Settings from the left sidebar.

  3. You can modify the following information about the class:
    • Class Name: You can change the name of your class by typing a new name into the field.
    • School Year: You can select the appropriate school year from the drop-down menu.
    • Grading Period: You can select the appropriate grading period from the drop-down menu.
    • Period of the Day: You can enter the period number in the field.
    • Grade Level: You can select a grade level for your class using the drop-down menu. If you do not see a grade level that reflects the grade level for your class, you may choose Other.
    • Subject Area: You can select a subject area for your class using the drop-down menu. If you do not see a subject area that reflects the subject for your class, you may choose Other.
    • Course: If your school uses Engrade’s custom report cards, you may need to set a class course for your class. You should check with the administrator of your school’s account to determine which class course should be set for your class.

  4. From the Sort Students drop-down, you can select how your students display in your Gradebook. Engrade’s sorting options are:
    • Order Entered sorts students in the order you entered them, and new students will be added to the bottom of the list.
    • Last Name sorts students alphabetically by last name.
    • First Name sorts students alphabetically by first name.
    • ID Number sorts students by student ID in ascending numerical order.
    • Class Percentage sorts students with the highest percentage listed first.
    • You may also choose to display students last name first or first name first using the Name Order drop-down.

  5. Check the Allow students to message teachers checkbox to let students send Engrade messages to teachers from student accounts. If it is unchecked, students will not be able to send messages.

If you have this option unchecked for one class, but not another class, a student in both classes will still be able to message you.

  6. Select the desired discussion settings:
    • Allow students to post topics to the discussion board lets students create topics on the Discussions page. If this box is unchecked, only the teacher will be able to create new posts on the Discussions page, and students can only respond to posts the teacher creates.
    • Allow student attachments in discussion board posts lets students attach files to their discussion board posts.
    • Allow student rich text in discussion board posts provides students with a rich text editor to create/edit their posts.

  7. Check the Allow students to message each other checkbox to let students send other students messages through their Engrade student accounts. If this box is unchecked, students will not be able to message other students in the class.

  8. You may select a Gradebook configuration for your class from the Gradebook Configuration drop-down. Options include:
      • Classic Gradebook
      • Standards Based Gradebook
      • Classic + Standards (Scaled)
      • Classic + Standards (Mapped)
      • If no standards exist for your class’s subject area, we recommend selecting Classic Gradebook.
      • If standards exist for your class’s subject area, we recommend selecting Classic + Standards (Scaled).

    • Click the green Submit button to save your basic class settings.
